Waterford Estate is situated in one of the world’s most visually arresting pockets of paradise. Nestled in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, in the world-renowned Stellenbosch region, this 120-hectare property owned by Jeremy and Leigh Ord and managed by partner and Cellar master Kevin Arnold. The Estate boasts old citrus groves, rolling lawns, water features and fragrant lavender and rosemary beds. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the heart of Provence or the Spanish countryside, with your first glimpse of this enchanting realm. However, we are immensely proud of our uniquely South African location and the rich diversity of our indigenous flora and fauna.
The goal in producing The Jem is to truly express the diversity of our terroir, and more specifically the soils on Waterford Estate. To reach this goal of completeness, the blend is compromised of different varietals all grown on the property. Driven by Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe cherries, black current and cedar wood. Also well complimented by truffle like flavours and exotic spice. The wine is well layered and integrated tannins combine with fruit flavours to offer an elegant yet long lasting finish that is classically dry and rewarding.
A classic Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon showing characteristic sweet cedar wood, cold stone and light earthy tones with strong violet, red berry and black current fruit. The wine is elegantly structured with a typical tight and dry structure which finishes with great balance and freshness. The wine will age and develop harmoniously for 6 to 15 years.
Vibrant dark fruit, earthy and clove pepper spice lead the aromatics of this Stellenbosch Shiraz, accompanied by soft plum fruit undertones. Natural acidity and the classic granular tannins are very characteristic of the voluptuous nature of a Stellenbosch Shiraz. This vintage is named after Nadine, Kevin and Heather’s daughter.
A brilliant olive-green hue very characteristic of this single vineyard Chardonnay. The aromatics of this wine is driven by fresh peach pip, lime and a gentle influence from oak. The age of these vines still prove to produce lovely restraint, tightly structured wines which are rather perfumed when young but develop beautifully from time spent in bottle, 2-5 years from release.
A strict selection of Elgin’s best quality vineyards. A more restrained style of Sauvignon blanc showing fresh granadilla and green apple fruit, with underlying chalk and slate notes confirming the Elgin origin of the grapes. The palate is finely textured with soft fruit, tight acidity, and a deceptively long finish of flavours. A wine showing the true expression of Elgin terroir on Sauvignon blanc.
